The Patented Wind Erosion Measurement System of Erciyes University Which Developed with the Support of Erciyes Teknopark Will Be Used in North Carolina State University of the USA as Technology

The Wind Erosion Measurement System, developed by Prof. Dr. Mustafa Başaran, lecturer at Erciyes University, Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Soil Science and Plant Nutrition and Prof. Dr. Günay Erpul, leader of erosion research, under the support from Erciyes Teknopark has been sent to North Carolina State University based in the United States of America to measure dust emissions at construction areas.

Prof. Dr. Mustafa Başaran, lecturer at Erciyes University, Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Soil Science and Plant Nutrition and Prof. Dr. Günay Erpul, leader of erosion research, have developed the Wind Erosion Measurement System in order to provide a more accurate calculation and measurement of wind erosion in areas where wind erosion and dust are transported intensively. The system, which is easy to use and which provides more accurate measurement of soil when compared to available methods and which provides an accuracy rate of over 90%, has received a large number of demands after being published on international journals. Upon request from the North Carolina State University in the United States, 100 units were sent.

Prof. Dr. Mustafa Başaran, lecturer at Erciyes University, Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Soil Science and Plant Nutrition provided information about their discovery and went on to say, "Wind erosion is one of the most important events in terms of the health of agricultural land, plant health, biodiversity and human health, especially in arid and semi-arid regions, just like in Turkey. There should be periodic monitoring. There are many tools developed for this aim throughout the world. Especially the devices which are developed by European and American researchers are not very effective. In order to develop a more effective alternative to these so-called passive traps, we have applied to a TÜBİTAK project in 2010. Within the scope of this TÜBİTAK project, we have developed a new wind erosion measurement system with twice the efficiency of the instruments developed by European and American scientists. We carried out the first trials of the system in the artificial sprinkler and wind erosion simulation tunnels of Gent University of Belgium within the scope of ERASMUS. We started the preparing of the prototype after the reaching high efficiency. We received not only the support of TUBITAK but also the private sector in this sense."

Prof. Dr. Başaran also said, "After developing our instrument and determining its activities, we published the scientific study we prepared in internationally respected journals. Then we started to receive interest for our instrument from many parts of the world. In fact, the instrument we developed is extremely simple, but has an aerodynamic structure with excellent properties. It makes possible to catch the very small grains (even smaller than 100 micron) when they are moving on the atmosphere. Therefore, it contributes to the accurate and qualified calculation of wind erosion measurements. The tool which we have developed is being used by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry for monitoring wind erosion especially in Konya region for 5 years. We achieved very successful results.”

"After the publication of our tool in the international literature, we received a request to use our tools from the US North Carolina State University. As a result of our correspondences, perhaps for the first time a technology transfer has been made to an American technology from Erciyes University in Turkey. We sent 100 units of our product. An export has been made but more importantly, a technology transfer from a Turkish university to American university has been carried out for the first time. We believe that this is an important achievement. The support given to us by Erciyes University technology development zone is substantial."

 “The Patent Application has been made and relevant registration process is going on”

Informing that they have applied to the Turkish Institute for Patents to obtain the patent for the device, Prof. Dr. Başaran said, "We have developed this product together with our erosion research leader Prof. Dr. Günay Erpul. After receiving the effective results of the product, we applied to the Turkish Patent Institute for patent protection. Inspection reports are very positive and probably our product will be registered on the national scale soon. I would like to thank Erciyes Technology Transfer Office for their support and help. Our product has been developed especially for the measurement and evaluation of wind erosion in agricultural and pasture areas. In addition, the purpose of demanding from the United States is to measure dust emissions in construction sites. Our product can also be used for dust measurement in construction sites. It is also a product that can be used for dust measurements and dust control at mining sites. "

"We have prevented the use of foreign products in future studies to be conducted in Turkey for this purpose."

Indicating that they have been providing support for keeping thousands of Turkish liras in Turkey, Başaran added, "We developed this product in Turkey and the use of foreign products in relevant works to be done for this purpose have been prevented. We may contributed to having hundreds of thousands of liras of money in our country. Our product is completely national and local. We transferred the license of our product to Erciyes Technology Transfer Office. Thereafter, Erciyes University Technology Transfer Office will receive these requests on the national and international scales."

"The system is being used in the researches both in Turkey and overseas"

Prof. Dr. Günay Erpul, Erosion Research Leader also said, "Wind Erosion Measurement System is increasingly used in many researches conducted in Turkey as well as overseas countries. Similarly, last year both the United States and Australia have made requests to use erosion measurement systems in their own research. We have been sending their demands. Throughout this process, Erciyes University have provided substantial support to us both in the promotion and in the realization of relevant steps."
